How to get the most out of the S5 Conference

With the S5 conference coming up this week, we thought we’d take the opportunity to tell you a bit more about it and how you can get the most out of it.

Here’s a link (opens in new window) to the event page where you can find out all about the event itself and get signed up if you haven’t done so already. Here’s the basic information:

The conference takes place on Wednesday 21st March at the University of Edinburgh in Appleton Tower. Registration is open from 5pm and the event itself starts at 5.30pm. It runs until 8pm. There will be refreshments available over the course of the event. You may be getting a bus to/from the event so make sure you know your pick up time and what time you'll be getting dropped off as well. There will be a member of staff who will be on the bus to meet you and they will make sure you get back on the righ bus after the event as well.

Here are our top tips to help you out at the conference:
Ask all the questions!

You’re hopefully beginning the process of working out which universities and courses you want to apply to next year, and this is going to involve getting used to asking lots of questions. Maybe think of a few questions before you come. These could either be for the LEAPS staff, the student volunteers or the people that will be there from other universities.

Keep an open mind about your options.

Don’t count yourself out of anything just yet and don’t dismiss ideas because of things you’ve heard before. Now is the time to find out as much as you can and to keep your options open.

Be bold.

During the conference, there are no stupid questions, everyone is there for your benefit and to give you the best information they can. In particular, our student volunteers are going to be at the conference to give you a real idea of what it’s like to be a student so if you want to know things like whether sharing a flat with 4 other people is really a fun experience, then talk to them about it. They’ll give you their honest opinions and are lovely as well.

Take notes in the workshops.

It’s easy to forget things as soon as you step outside the door so make sure you have something written down to help you remember the good advice later on. It will also help you to work through what we will discuss in the workshops themselves.

Carry on thinking about your options after the conference.

It’s easy to think that you’ve done everything you need to while you’re at the conference but you’re going to get much more out of it if you go away and think about what we’ve discussed after. Use your notes to think about how you’re making your choices and what you can be doing to strengthen your application next year.

You will have a lot of information thrown at you over the course of the conference so don’t be afraid to ask for clarification on anything you don’t understand. And if there’s something you need help with after the conference, you can always get in touch with us again via email, phone or Twitter.

We look forward to seeing you there!
