LEAPS promotes Higher Education while supporting young people in secondary schools in South East Scotland.

Many of the events we normally deliver in school and on campus are designed around the valuable input of university student volunteers. These events usually include school-based workshops, campus visits and conferences held at universities in and around Edinburgh. As a LEAPS volunteer you would play a vital role, working with small groups of pupils in structured workshops led by LEAPS staff. (University students in second year or above at one of these institutions are able to volunteer with LEAPS.)

The LEAPS volunteering programme normally takes place between November and March each year. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 we were unable to run any school workshops with Student Volunteers in November or December. However, we are planning to restart workshops and activities for local schools from February to May 2021. At this stage we are unsure if we will be able to deliver any workshops in schools and on university campus, as we have done in the past, or if we will be delivering all our workshops and support virtually for this academic year. However, no matter what format we use we are very much looking forward to working with new and returning LEAPS volunteers again from February 2021.

If you are interested in becoming a LEAPS volunteer, finding out more and getting started is really easy. All you have to do is;

1. Take part in LEAPS Volunteer Training

This doesn’t commit you to becoming a LEAPS volunteer – it’s more a case of taking part to see if you think it’s the volunteering opportunity you are looking for.

The training sessions will take place online this year in late January/early February and will cover the type of events volunteers typically get involved in. You can also read more about our events in advance of the training here. We will also give you information on the pupils you will be working with, and what your role is likely to be in a school workshop or campus based event, whether they take place virtually or in person. There will also be some experienced LEAPS volunteers attending who will be sharing their experiences of being a LEAPS volunteer and answering any questions you might have. By the end of the session you will have received almost all of the training you need in order to get you started as a LEAPS volunteer, should you wish to do so.

Please note students in second year and above from these institutions are eligible to contribute as LEAPS volunteers. Students can attend any one of the online training sessions that suit them.

Our 2021 LEAPS Online Volunteer Information and Training Sessions will take place in January and February.

To take part in a session you will need:

  • An Internet connection, on a laptop, tablet, smartphone or similar. You might find it best to watch and participate on a laptop or larger screen, if it is available.
  • Something to take notes on.
  • Headphones to hear the presenters, or speakers on your device.
  • You do not need to have a microphone or camera, as participants will also be able to take part via the chatbox.
  • You do not need to download an app, however the session will work best in Google Chrome browser, so you might consider installing this. Please note that this webinar link will not work in Internet Explorer.

2. Register as a LEAPS Volunteer

If, after taking part in the online LEAPS Volunteer Information and Training Session, you decide you might like to get involved as a LEAPS volunteer, then we will ask you to complete an online volunteer registration form and provide details of one academic referee from your university. More information on this will be given at the online Volunteer Information and Training Session.

3. Try out a LEAPS workshop and see for yourself!

Shortly after attending an online training session, we would encourage registered volunteers to try out a few workshops on dates that suits you. Workshops, whether virtual or in person, will be well staffed by the LEAPS team, and new volunteers will have the opportunity to volunteer alongside more experienced LEAPS volunteers which can help you settle into your new role as a volunteer.

Workshops and events for local schools will run this year from February to May and will be posted regularly on our online Volunteer Noticeboard. There is no pressure to sign up for a set number of workshops per semester - you can decide how much you get involved.

4. Already a LEAPS Volunteer?

If you are already a registered LEAPS volunteer and would like to continue volunteering in 2021 we would love to welcome you back!  We will email you in late January/early February to ask you to re-register as a volunteer for 2021 by completing a quick online form (not the one that is currently showing below).  Following your re-registration with LEAPS, we'll then keep you updated by posting any forthcoming workshops and events - virtual or otherwise - on the online Volunteer Noticeboard from late February to May. We'll alert you by email once we post any new events and keep you updated with briefings on any new workshop formats. If you want to sign up for any events you would just email us in the normal way at We look forward to welcoming you back very soon but if you have any queries in the meantime please just get in touch by email at We would love to hear from you!
